Oneida-Madison Electric Cooperative (OMEC) supports the responsible use of member-owned renewable energy systems, such as solar or wind. Our policies are designed to ensure these systems are safely and fairly integrated into our electric grid, with clear application steps, technical requirements, and a buyback credit for excess energy returned to the system.

These guidelines are intended to protect both individual members and the integrity of the overall system. While we welcome interest from contractors, consultants, and the general public, detailed discussions about specific accounts or interconnection agreements are reserved for OMEC members or their authorized representatives.

As a not-for-profit, member-owned cooperative, we take seriously our responsibility to protect members from unwanted or misleading solicitations. We strive to ensure that any energy-related decisions made by our members are informed, voluntary, and in their best interest.

Whether you’re a member or simply seeking general information, we’re happy to provide guidance and resources.

General Information About OMEC’s Member-Owned Generation Policies

  1. Support for Renewable Energy: OMEC supports members who wish to install and operate small-scale renewable energy systems (such as solar or wind) on their property.
  2. Safety First: All interconnected systems must meet strict safety and technical standards to protect cooperative personnel, the public, and the distribution system.
  3. Application Required: Members must complete an interconnection application and receive OMEC’s written approval before connecting any system to the Cooperative’s network.
  4. System Size Limit: Eligible member-owned systems are limited in capacity to ensure safe operation and protect the integrity of the overall electric distribution system.
  5. Inspection Process: OMEC performs a required inspection prior to connection. Additional inspections may be necessary if changes are made or issues are identified.
  6. Buyback Credit: Members whose systems generate more electricity than they use may receive a credit on their bill for the excess energy sent back to the grid.
  7. Buyback Rate Review: An avoided cost method is used to calculate generation credits and is subject to periodic review by OMEC’s Board of Directors and may change over time.
  8. Member Responsibility: Members are responsible for maintaining their system in a safe and operable condition and for complying with all applicable codes and permitting requirements.
  9. Cooperative Access: OMEC reserves the right to access interconnected systems for inspections, maintenance coordination, or safety concerns
